Embrace Your Unique Calling

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

Many times we spend all of our time focusing on the responsibility of leadership without embracing the opportunity it brings. In a worship context, we rightly must make sure that we are good stewards of the calling on our lives. Are we living a life that honors God? Are we fully prepared for our weekend experiences? Are we confidently speaking truth from stage? These are the fundamentals. The basics.

However, if you don’t have a vision for your calling or the platform God has given you, you will likely end up coasting through your ministry without taking bold steps of faith and walking in the power of the Holy Spirit. How has God uniquely gifted you or your team? Lean into those gifts and pioneer new innovations. Do you have a heart for students? Then lead a student small group knowing that the platform you have on stage gives you a unique ability to speak into their lives. Take your spiritual calling seriously and spend concentrated time in prayer for your pastor and for spiritual breakthroughs to happen in your worship experiences.

Leadership is more than just meeting all the requirements in a job description. God is looking for people who aren’t satisfied with “good enough.” He desires hearts that long to be used by Him. I want to be that man. I pray you do too.

Thinking Inside The Box

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

Rock stars create the best stories. Like this one told from their biography:  U2 was in Chicago on their first US tour and the club they were playing had tables set up across the room, all the way up to the very front of the stage. Bono, still in his teenage years said, “We don’t play shows unless there’s standing room at the stage.” The club manager said, “Welcome to America…you don’t tell us what to do. The tables are staying.”

The show started, people filled the club, along with every table…even those surrounding the stage. And by the second song, in true rock star form, Bono left the front of the stage and made his way on to the tops of each table around the stage.

A rule of thumb that Pastor Steven has taught us to live by is we might not always have the luxury of thinking “outside the box.” We might not always be able to dream up the most out-of-the-box, elaborate element for a weekend. Besides, a true test of creativity and ingenuity is how to create while being INSIDE the box. Stop thinking that a portable campus, or a small stage, or lack of musicians, or limited resources are holding you back. Work what you got! God’s given you what’s before you, so get the creative juices flowing and think inside the box.

Let us learn yet again from the illustrious Bono. When you can’t move the tables, get on top of them and dance.

Some New Initiatives…

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

We met with our entire worship team (musicians and vocalists) on Wednesday night. Wade shared some great thoughts on our purpose as worship leaders. I won’t go into that now… i’ll let him blog about it since he said it all so well the other night. But, i do want to share some of our new goals for the team. We are really excited to take our guys and girls to the next level in worship and just dig deeper as men and women of God.

First, we will all be reading Forgotten God, by Francis Chan. You may remember Chris blogging about it a while back. The guys and I read it a few months ago and really felt it spoke to us as worshippers. So now we are really pumped to read it with our entire worship team! Each week until we finish, we will use it as discussion for our Sunday devotional.

Second, we are starting a monthly breakfast with our players and vocalists. It will be a time of learning, prayer, and fellowship. I am really looking forward to seeing the Lord move through this monthly meeting. Just getting everyone in one room on a regular basis will be so much fun!

And third, Wade has cast a great vision for our team on the subject of Prayer and Fasting. So when the time arises, we will begin to fast as an entire team (not just worship leaders). As a church, we have seen God move mightily through fasting and prayer. I am so eager to see how He takes our team to the next level.

So that’s the plan. We are really excited about it! Pray for us… let us know how to pray for you! I hope this challenges some of you to pray and seek the Lord about new ways to bring your team to a higher level of worship. Lets give Him our best! :)

Worship Musicians

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I got the chance to observe all three of our campuses this weekend. It is always a helpful time of evaluation as well as a refreshing chance to worship off the stage. One of my favorite moments of the weekend was at our Providence 9:15 worship experience. The band was leading us in The Lord Is My Rock, and during the first chorus most of the band drops out as keys and some ambient guitars carry everything. During that chorus, I noticed Jeremy Smith, the bass player, with his hand raised high in the air singing that chorus out with everything he had. He wasn’t playing a note on the bass, but in that moment he did more to lead me in worship than anything a worship leader said from stage. I saw him authentically singing to the Lord, and I believed that he believed the words of that song. That he was singing in response to how God had proven to be a rock in his life.

Let me break it down as simply as I can. If you are part of a worship band, don’t limit yourself to just playing the right parts. Smile. Sing the songs the worship leader is calling your church to sing. Go for it in worship in a way that is authentic for you. And know this – You have the ability to draw people into a spirit of worship without ever playing a single note.
